Abstract
Background: Asthma is one of the most chronic inflammatory diseases in the world. The suffer from asthma prevalence is increasing, especially in urban communities and the people who do the urbanization.
Methods: This study includes the type of analytical research with cross sectional approach performed between September to October 2012. Samples of this study were grade V and VI in Medan City. The samples in this study taken using a consecutive sampling technique. The data collected from questionnaires filled behavior by the respondents and the respondents’ parents and then performed a hypothetical test.
Result: Out of 238 respondents surveyed earned 23 respondents (9.7%) patients with Asthma and 215 respondents (90.3%) normal. By using the Chi-Square test, there was significant association between asthma and a history of family atophy (p = 0.001), a history of infection (p = 0.038), and a furry pet ownership (p = 0.041). For risk factor a history of breast feeding, nutritional status, exposure to cigarette smoke, and cotton furnishings ownership, there was no significant association with asthma.
Conclusion: The incidence of asthma in elementary school include history of family atophy, history of infection, and furry pet ownership. (J Respir Indo. 2015; 35: 118-23)
