Abstract
Background: Batik is a craft which has a high art and culture value to Indonesian especially Javanese. Chemical agents exposure at the batik coloring process caused irritation to the respiratory system. This study aimed to learn the effects of chemical agents exposure at the coloring process of batik’s making to the lung clinical impairment of the batik’s industry worker.
Methods: This study is an observational analytic study with cross sectional design. The total sample of the study are 58 people divided to 29 people of exposed group and 29 people of non exposed group. The effect of coloring process was by respiratory symptom, and lung clinical impairment.
Results: There is a significant relation between chemical agents exposure to lung clinical impairment which include chronic bronchitis, COPD, and occupational asthma (p=0,001). Chemical agents exposure making has a significant risk which caused lung clinical impairment (RP=12; CI 95% 1,667-86,392). There is a very significant difference between chemical agents exposure with the respiratory symptom chronic cough (p=0,000), chronic phlegm (p=0,000), wheezing (p=0,005) and chest tightness (p=0,001). There is a significant difference between the exposed group with the non exposed group to an occupational asthma event (p=0,002).
Conclusion: There is a very significant relation between chemical agents exposure at the coloring process of the batik’s making with the lung clinical impairment. (J Respir Indo. 2014; 34:77-86)
