Abstract
Background: Hypoxemia during exercise could be occured in COPD and could decreased pulmonary rehabilitation tolerance. The purposed of this study is to determine the effect of exercise on oxygen saturation in patients with stable COPD in Adam Malik Hospital.
Method: This study is an experiment study with pre test and post test design of which stable COPD in Adam Malik hospital Medan performed between August to October 2013. There were 12 subjects of stable COPD.
Result: Of 12 subjects were men, smoker and mostly more than 60 years old stable COPD. all this patients is men (100%) and most of this patients more than 61 years old. All this sample are smoker. Based on index Brinkman, most of this sample is heavy smoker. From the spirometry the severity of COPD based on GOLD is severe degree. There is no significant oxygen saturation per, during and post exercise (cycle ergometry). There is no significant oxygen saturation pre exercise, during and post exercise (cycle ergometry).
Conclusion: There was no significant difference in oxygen saturation before, during, and after exercise in secere COPD subjects, but there was a significant difference in mild to moderate stable COPD subjects. (J Respir Indo. 2015; 35: 167-71)
