Abstract
Background: Magnesium has important rule to prevent bronchoconstriction in asthma, effected smooth muscle relaxation. Hypomagnesemia related to bronchial hyperresponsivity that can lead to poor control of asthma. The aim of this study is to determine association between serum magnesium level and degree of asthma control.
Methods: The study use cross sectional study. We noted age, sex, history of asthma, exacerbation, atopy, regularly control, therapy, asthma control test score and magnesium. Data analyzed using statistic Chi-square, Kruskall-Wallis and Spearman’s Rho tests.
Results: The total 90 of study subjects divided in three groups, 52 uncontrolled asthma patients with 44.2 % hypomagnesemia, 21 partly control asthma patients with hypomagnesemia 14.3 % and 17 controlled asthma patients without hypomagnesemia. The mean of magnesium value for uncontrolled asthma is lowest between group (1.992±0.35 mg/dl). Significantly differences between mean value magnesium between uncontrolled asthma group and controlled asthma group (p value 0.001), and regularly control patients with level control asthma.
Conclusion: Regularly visit control effect level control asthma. There are significant difference for serum magnesium level in uncontrolled asthma and fully controlled asthma. We found association between decreasing of serum magnesium level and degree of asthma control, more low serum magnesium level lead to uncontrolled asthma. (J Respir Indo. 2015; 35: 223-9)
