Abstract
Background: Interleukin-8 is a proinflammatory cytokines are elevated in acute exacerbation of COPD. CAT scores will increase with worsening of clinical symptoms of COPD. Inhaled furosemide has a bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory effect, can lower the activity of vagal irritant receptors and fibers C. This study aimed to analyze the effect of inhaled furosemide on plasma levels of IL-8 and score CAT acute exacerbation of COPD patients.
Methods: A quasi-experimental clinical trial, pre and post test design with 32 acute exacerbation of COPD patients who are hospitalized in dr. Moewardi Surakarta August-November 2015 used consecutive sampling. The independent variable is inhaled furosemide dose of 40 mg every 12 hours for treatment, while the dependent variables are the plasma levels of IL-8 and score CAT acute exacerbation of COPD patients.
Results: The mean age are 67.7±11.1 years, 26 (81%) were male and 6 (19%) of women. In the control group, the levels of the beginning and end of the IL-8 plasma contained a significant rise, while scores of CAT decreased significantly. Furosemide groups are a significant decrease in plasma levels of IL-8 and CAT in the final value. The difference in value between the beginning and the end of furosemide group and the control group gained significant difference in the levels of IL-8, but no significant found of CAT score.
Conclusions: Inhaled Furosemide is able to reduce levels of plasma IL-8, fix the scores of CAT, and shorten the length of acute exacerbation of COPD patients. (J Respir Indo. 2016; 36: 147-56)
