Abstract
Background : Acute respiratory tract infections (ARI) are a leading cause of death both in infants and children under five years of age. ARI has a characteristic of a pandemic, nevertheless has received less attention and it needs to be addressed among all sectors. Indonesia has a wide socioeconomic gap, hence, the health sector must contribute to efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality taking into account the sociocultural aspects of the country. The general objective of the research is to formulate a model for handling infants with ARI in the form of integrated care that takes into account sociocultural aspects of Indonesia.
Methods : This study is preliminary study, uses a mixed method research design, which is a mixture of quantitative and qualitative research. The research was conducted in Jakarta, Bandung, Surakarta and Padang. The study was conducted through interviews with mothers who took their children to the health centers for treatment.
Results : Most of the subjects were housewives (only a small number were working mothers) who brought their children to the health center for treatment. Subjects were aged mostly between 20-30 years. Most of the mothers’ education level was high school. Subjects brought their children with ARIs to health care facilities.
Conclusion : Most of the subjects know about signs and symptoms of respiratory tract infections. (J Respir Indo. 2013; 33:173-8)
