Abstract
Background : Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a risk factor for tuberculosis and may modify its presenting features. There is good evidence that DM makes a substansial contribution to TB incidence. Considering the contradictory results of the previous studies, this study was conducted for further investigation, especially in Indonesia. The aim of this study was to compare clinically, radiologically, and culture conversion of MDR TB patients with diabetic and non-diabetic group.
Methods : This was a cross sectional study. All newly diagnosed patients with Multidrug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR TB) with and without DM from Januari 2011 to Juli 2012 enrolled in programmatic management of drug resistant tuberculosis (PMDT) implementation at Dr. Moewardi Hospital, were included in the study. They were followed up clinically, radiologically, and time of culture conversion at the same time. The collected data was analysed using chi-square design study.
Results : Forthy three patients were included in this study. Ten patients with history of DM and the others don’t. From radiological finding, there were significant differences in characteristic lesion (p=0.004) and area involvement (p=0.003). But no significant differences in both group for clinical presentation and time of sputum culture conversion.
Conclusion : Characteristic lesion and area involvement from radiological finding have significant differences in diabetic and non diabetic MDR TB patients, but not in clinical presentation and culture conversion. (J Respir Indo. 2013; 33:103-9)
