Abstract

Asthmatic patients have a specifc pattern of airway infammation that underlies the clinical features. Corticosteroids known to be useful for controlling asthma and have a major effect  in reducing infammation of the airway wall, suppress the expression of various genes in the airway infammation and repair the bronchial hyperresponsiveness. However, a few asthmatic patients show a poor or absent response even to high doses of corticosteroids. Knowing the mechanisms of corticosteroids resistance in asthma may lead to provide a better understanding on the management of corticosteroid resistant asthma. Molecular mechanisms of corticosteroids resistance include abnormalities in ligand binding and translocation of the nucleus, decreased expression and or co-repressor protein activity or increased expression of infammatory transcription factors.
