Abstract
Background: COPD is considered as a complex disease and global problem that is predicted to be the third most common cause of death by 2030. The 2014 GOLD (Global Strategy for the Diagnosis, Management, and Prevention of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease [COPD]) consensus reported the uses of symptoms, exacerbation history, and forced expiratory volume (FEV1) % to categorized patients according to the disease severity and treatment guidelines. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between CAT score and MMRC with FEV1 and exarcerbation risk of COPD patients.
Methods : A descriptive study was conducted on 100 stable COPD patients at Pulmonary Clinic Adam Malik General Hospital and Pirngadi General Hospital from April to July 2014 statistically compared the relationship between CAT score, MMRC scale and FEV1 COPD stages, and exacerbation risk by using Spearman’s rho test
Results: There were 60 patients (60%) of CAT score ≥ 10 and 40 patients (40%) of CAT score < 10. There were 50 patients (50%) of GOLD 3, 45 (45%) patients of GOLD 2, 5 patients (5%) of GOLD 4, no patients of GOLD 1. We found higher patients of once outpatients or more which 55 patients (55%), once or no exacerbation in last 12 months were 45 patients (45%). CAT score and MMRC found as significant correlation with FEV1 (p<0,05). A correlations found between CAT score and exacerbation frequency (p=0,042). No correlation found between MMRC and exacerbation (p>0,05).
Conclusion: There was a correlation between CAT score, MMRC scale with FEV1. Correlation of CAT score with exacerbations was found. No correlation between MMRC scale with exacerbation. (J Respir Indo. 2015; 35: 218-22)
