Abstract
Background: Respiratory tract infections are the leading cause of acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD). The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of bacterial infection, bacterial profile, antibiotics sensitivity and comparison of patient characteristics according to sputum culture.
Methods: A cross sectional study of all patients admitted to Dr. Moewardi Hospital with AECOPD from January 1 until November th 31 2011.
Results: Of 65 patients, 46 patients (71%) had positive sputum cultures. Pathogen most frequently isolated were Klebsiella spp (30,4%).The most sensitive antibiotic was meropenem (80%). There were correlation in degree of exacerbation and obstruction to bacterial sputum culture result, there were no significant differences in other parameters.
Conclusion: Incidence bacterial infection by positive sputum culture in AECOPD was about 71%, Klebsiella spp was the most common pathogen and meropenem was the most sensitive antibiotic. There were significant correlation degree of exacerbation and obstruction to positive sputum culture.
Keywords: Bacterial infection, sputum culture, acute exacerbation of COPD.
