Abstract
Background: Adherence levels of persistent asthma patients to regular medication of asthma is still low, resulting in uncontrolled asthma that cause the clinical consequences such as asthma exacerbations and decreased quality of life of patients. This study aimed to determine the correlation of asthma medication adherence by MMAS-8 and the quality of life in persistent asthma patients at Pulmonary Polyclinic dr.Zainoel Abidin Hospital (RSUDZA) Banda Aceh.
Methods: This study used an observational analytic cross-sectional design. Subjects were consisted of 59 patients with persistent asthma obtained by purposive sampling technique starting from 18 September to 4 November 2015. Assessment of asthma medication adherence by using Morisky Medication Adherence Scales 8 (MMAS-8) and quality of life was assessed by Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire Standard (AQLQ(S)).
Results: The results of data analysis using Spearman statistical test (Confident Interval 95%; α = 0.05); p = 0.000 (p < α) and r = 0.580, showed that there was a correlation between asthma medication adherence and quality of life of patients, with moderate correlation value.
Conclusions:Based on the results of this study, it could be concluded that there was a correlation between asthma medication adherence by MMAS-8 and the quality of life in persistent asthma patients at Pulmonary Polyclinic RSUDZA Banda Aceh. The higher level of asthma medication adherence, the better quality of life of patients. (J Respir Indo. 2016; 36: 130-7)
