Background: Adiponectin is a one of adipocytokine that mediate antiinflammation and has a role in asthma. Adiponectin and its receptor (AdipoR1, AdipoR2, T-cadherin) are expressed on multiple cell types in the lung. Correlation between adiponectin with asthma in human is still controversial. The aim of the study was to determine the correlation between adiponectin levels and degree of airway obstruction and severity level of asthma. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study approach in 72 subjects asthma aged 18 – 55 years old. Study was done at Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo hospital and satellites hospital between June until July 2013. Serum adiponectin was measured by Enzyme Linked Immuno
Sorbent Assay (ELISA) method. Results: Mean of adiponectin is lower in severe persistent asthma than intermitten asthma, but there is no significant difference. (5.21 vs 5.65; p = 0.620). Lower adiponectin level were found more significant in persistent asthma than in intermittent asthma. (66.7% vs 39.6%;p = 0.03). Subjects with lower adiponectin’s level have 3.1 times risk to be persistent asthma than subjects with normal/higher adiponectin level. (95% CI OR : 3.1(1.10 – 8.53) ). Subjects with lower adiponectin’s level have a risk 2,6 times to have moderate/severe obstruction than subjects with normal/higher adiponectin’s level. (95% CI OR : 2.6 (0.93 – 7.52)). Conclusions: There is correlation between adiponectin and airway obstruction and severity of asthma. Decrease of anti-inflammation state have correlation with obstruction level and severity level of asthma. (J Respir Indo. 2014; 34: 132-8)
