Abstract
Background: The prevalence of asthma increased in industrialized countries. One of the industrialization influence is increasing air pollution, where air pollution is known to affect the level of asthma control. The cement industry is an important industry in Indonesia, the cement industry produces smoke and dust that can spread to the environment and estimated to affect the community health.
Methods: A case control study in two groups of asthmatic patients which 50 subjects of exposed group and 50 subejects of unexposed group by Padang cement dust along May to July 2015. The exposed group taken from Lubuk Kilangan Community Health Center and unexposed group taken from Air Dingin Community Health Center, Padang.
Results: Concentration of dust in exposed area 53.840 ug/Nm3 and dust concentrations in unexposed area 8.751 ug/Nm3. The sample study are 50 people of exposed group and 50 people of unexposed group. Most level of asthma control in exposed group is not controlled (44%) and level of asthma control in unexposed group is partial controlled (38%). There are differences in the level of asthma control but not statistically significant (p = 0.255). The influence of the length domicile asthma patients in exposed area with the level of asthma control found in patients who are domiciled 2-19 years most level of asthma control is uncontrolled (40%), while in the group with domicile 20-40 years is uncontrolled (50%) but this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.800).
Conclusion: There is a difference level of asthma control in exposed area with level of asthma control in unexposed area but not statistically significant. There is a relationship between the length domicile asthma patients in exposed area with the level of asthma control but not statistically significant. (J Respir Indo. 2016; 36: 88-93)
