Association Between Vitamin D Level with Asthma Control Level, Lung Function, Interleukin-10 and Interleukin-17 in Persistent Bronchial Asthma Patients

Abstract
Background : Vitamin D deficiency is hypothesized to play a role in increasing incidence of asthma. Vitamin D has a role as an immunomodulator in asthma. Current research on vitamin D and asthma hasn’t been studied in adult asthma in Indonesia. The aim of this study was to investigate association between plasma vitamin D level with asthma control level, pulmonary function, plasma IL- 10 and IL-17 level in persistent asthma subjects.
Methods : Cross sectional study of 38 subjects with persistent asthma were enrolled from pulmonary clinic Dr. Saiful Anwar General Hospital Malang to assess the relationship between plasma vitamin D level with asthma control level (ACT score), pulmonary function (FEV1), plasma IL-10 and IL-17 level. Vitamin D, IL-10 and IL-17 level were measured by ELISA.
Results : All subjects (100%) had vitamin D deficiency. The mean plasma vitamin D level was 15.87±3.31 nmol/L. Plasma vitamin D level was not significantly associated to asthma control level (p=0.560) and FEV1(p=0.845). Plasma vitamin D level was significantly negative associated to IL-10 (r=-0.339; p=0.039) and IL-17 level (r=-0.328, p=0.045).
Conclusion : Vitamin D level was inversely associated to IL-10 and IL-17 level. Vitamin D level was not associated to asthma control level and pulmonary function. (J Respir Indo. 2013; 33:155-62)
