Abstract
Background : Approximately 500.000 new cases of multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) in the worldwide. One study found diabetes mellitus (DM) as a contributing factor to develop MDR TB. Diabetes mellitus is known as risk factor to reactivation, late conversion and more complication during tuberculosis treatment. In this study we investigate characteristics, culture conversion, defaulted, death and adverse event during MDR TB treatment.
Methods : We conducted a cohort retrospective study using medical records of MDR TB patients of Persahabatan Hospital during September 2009 until October 2011.
Results : One hundred ninety-one MDR TB patients, thirty-six had verified a diabetes mellitus. Multidrug resistant tuberculosis patient with DM (MDRDM) had conversion after two month 50% and without DM (MDRNDM) 50.4%. Multidrug resistant tuberculosis with DM had more severe adverse event compare to those without DM but not statistically significant. Multidrug resistant tuberculosis patient with DM had higher defaulted and death.
Conclusion : Patient with DM have higher defaulted during treatment. Microbiology conversion after two month of MDRNDM more than MDRDM. (J Respir Indo. 2013; 33:92-102)
