Abstract
Background: Asthma is a serious public health problem in the world, its prevalence is increasing in areas away from the equator, the effect of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) from the sun as protection of allergies. UV exposure from sunlight activates vitamin D. Vitamin D actively contribute directly affect the response of IL-17 is a proinflammatory cytokine produced by Th17 T cells in particular play a role in neutrophilmigration and response to inflammation dominated by neutrophils, so that high IL-17 can show increased inflammatory response. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of ultraviolet light exposure to the levels of interleukin 17 in patients with asthma that is controlled partially in poly asthma Hospital Dr. Soetomo.
Methods: This research is a simple and random clinical trials in Asthma COPD clinic Dr. Soetomo Hospital on August-October 2015. Samples are partially controlled asthmatics according GINA classification, eligible men and women aged> 16 years old, is being awarded a bronchodilator and steroid combination therapy inhalasi.Sampel 30 patients were divided two groups control group and the treatment group, the treatment group at the UV exposed skin of the arm and legs of patients directly without using a sun block with a time of 5-10 minutes at 6:00 to 9:00 pm or hours of 3:00 p.m. to 17:00 pm under the supervision of a family for one month.
Results: there was no significant effect between the levels of interleukin 17 baseline and end of the study in the control group (p = 0.328; t= 1.013). In the treatment group there is a significant effect levels of interleukin-17 baseline and end of study (p = 0.000; t = 5.095). There is a significant inverse effect between UV exposure with levels of interleukin 17 (p = 0.005; t = -3.230).
Conclusion: the more often exposed to UVB directly the decreasing levels of interleukin 17. (J Respir Indo. 2016; 36: 198-203)
