Abstract
Background: Traffic police is a distinctive profession because of the huge responsibility, overnight shifts, long hours of working time and fractured sleep. These conditions interfere the working performance because of the sleepiness. Sleepiness might be correlated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) which causes dangerous pauses in breathing during sleep. The aim of this study was to know OSA suspected prevalence among police officer at east Jakarta.
Method: This study was conducted with cross sectional design. The data was collected in June 2014 at the police office in East Jakarta. Data collection used Berlin’s Questionnaire and Physical examinations (blood pressure, weight, height, neck circumference) to 93 police officers.
Result: This research showed that there are 17,2%, it means 16 respondents from 93 respondents have suspected OSA. Significant symptoms of suspected OSA were snoring (p = 0.0001), choking or gasping (p = 0.003) and apnea (p = 0.03). The related factors with suspected OSA were snoring historical in family (adjusted OR 3.913, p < 0.013, 95% CI 1.21 – 12.037).
Conclusion: This research found that there are 17.2%, it means 16 respondents from 93 police officer have suspected OSA. Prevalence of suspected OSA among police officers correlate with snoring historical in family. (J Respir Indo. 2016; 36: 67-72)
